The Roots of Debate

This reading was by Deborah Tannen discussing different methods of communication in class. For this reading i don't necessary think it is mostly applied to women. People in general are afraid of the same things when it comes to speaking in public. People are afraid of looking dumb. I was told once that there isn't a dumb question because someone else might have the same question. That's why we go to school to learn , so we shouldn't be afraid to ask and share our opinions. People have different ways of thinking and different points, so it doesn't matter if out ideas aren't shared. We are individuals and we can't help on having different opinions. When teaches get in arguments with teacher now it is not necessary discussing a theory is mostly why they got that grade. When schools where more strict students learn things and memorized a lot more because they didn't want to be yelled at or be humiliated in class. Now sometimes for school students aren't ready for their lesson even bring paper and pencil to class. It would be nice if schools could be meet in the middle of what school was and what it is now. Debating in class is good giving different opinions and it might help someone see things different.

  1. Maria,

I agree with you about being able to voice an opinion in class. One of the reasons I like going to Dixie College is the fact that we have small enough class sizes so that discussion and polite debate are able to occur. I especially like your thought that debating helps someone see things differently. In order to understand life completely it is important to view things through other people's eyes.
